A delegation of 18 farmers from Assam has arrived in Tripura to inspect the successful onion farming initiatives undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture in collaboration with Tripura Agricultural College and NABARD.
The visit aims to showcase the advanced techniques and support systems that have contributed to the success of onion cultivation in the state.
The exposure visit, facilitated by Tripura Agricultural College and NABARD, is designed to introduce farmers to modern agricultural technologies, precision farming, and organic horticulture practices.
A representative of the program emphasized, “Seeing is believing,” underlining the importance of hands-on learning experiences in agriculture.
On April 3, the visiting farmers toured the onion fields in Champamura and Laxmibil village of Bishalgarh, Sepahijala district. The delegation engaged with local farmers and agricultural experts to understand the methods and technologies being implemented in onion cultivation. Professor Dr. Trideep Bhattacharya from Tripura Agricultural College, Sector Officer Prabir Dutta from the Agriculture Department, and Circle Incharge Suman Dutta provided detailed insights into the farming process.
During the visit, successful onion farmer Sanjit Debnath, who is also the head of Laxmibil Panchayat, shared his experiences with the visiting farmers from Jorhat, Sonitpur, and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. Additionally, Manik Kumar Laskar from Champamura village, who cultivated onions for the first time this year, elaborated on the challenges and benefits of onion farming.
This year, 60 farmers in Bishalgarh sub-division have cultivated onions across 25 kani (approximately 8.3 hectares) of land, yielding an impressive 1,800 kg per hectare. The success of the project has inspired the visiting farmers from Assam, who expressed enthusiasm about implementing similar farming techniques in their respective districts.
The initiative aims to promote cross-state agricultural learning and encourage innovative strategies in income-generating activities such as organic farming, micro-irrigation, and sustainable vegetable cultivation. The visit is expected to strengthen inter-state collaboration and enhance the productivity of farmers in the Northeast region.
