Tripura Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy on Saturday alleged that opposition party workers are repeatedly coming under attack from unruly elements backed by a sitting Member of Parliament.
He also demanded the immediate rollback of increased power tariffs and house tax imposed by the state government.
Participating in a door-to-door campaign opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme, Roy questioned the state government's contradictory stance on smart meters.
“If smart meters are truly beneficial for the public, then why is the BJP opposing their implementation? Why shouldn't such measures be introduced in Tripura as well?” he asked.
Criticising the rising financial burden on citizens, the MLA said, “The government has hiked electricity tariffs and house taxes while imposing several other levies on the common people. We demand a complete rollback of these anti-people decisions. The government must convene an all-party meeting and take decisions through consensus.”
Roy also urged Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to take strict action against those responsible for attacks on opposition members.
“We are repeatedly facing attacks. One MP accused us of working with unruly elements—but can he name even one? The reality is that those truly indulging in hooliganism are closely linked to the same MP who lost the 2023 election. The person who called us unruly is, in fact, behaving in the most unruly manner,” Roy asserted.
He further said the Congress would continue its protest across the state until the government addresses their demands and ensures the safety of political workers.
