CPIM urges Tripura CM to ensure Police neutrality, Seeks action against law-breakers regardless of party

The CPI(M) Tripura State Committee has written to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, urging him to ensure that the state police remain impartial and take prompt legal action against offenders, regardless of their political or religious affiliations.

In the letter sent on Tuesday, a four-member CPI(M) delegation—comprising Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former ministers Naresh Jamatia and Manik Dey (also a CITU leader), and Krishna Rakshit—expressed deep concern over a series of violent attacks on opposition workers. They alleged that these attacks were carried out by miscreants largely patronized by the ruling BJP and Tipra Motha.

“It is deeply unfortunate and concerning that, even as you oversee the Home Department and publicly praise the state's law and order situation as stable, miscreants—many of them reportedly aligned with BJP and Tipra Motha—continue to undermine this claim through repeated, brazen attacks on opposition campaign activities,” the letter states. “It appears as though the so-called ‘Sushashan’ you have proclaimed is in fact a license for law-breakers, enabled by the inaction of certain police officers.”

The CPI(M) leaders highlighted several incidents between June 17 and July 7, in which opposition workers were assaulted and party offices vandalized—often in full view of police personnel, who, according to the letter, either stood by silently or were seen aiding the attackers.

“These incidents clearly show that the current law and order situation is no longer under the control of the police but is instead dictated by politically backed miscreants,” the letter continued. “This alarming trend not only undermines democratic rights but is also contributing to the overall deterioration of law and order across the state.”

Despite their concerns, the CPI(M) leaders expressed hope that the Chief Minister would intervene. “We trust that you will take steps to ensure the police act impartially and uphold the rule of law, without political bias. The credibility and honour associated with the Tripura Police—especially after being awarded the 'President's Colour'—must not be tarnished by the partisan conduct of a few officers engaged in suppressing the opposition,” the letter concluded.
