The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has approached the Tripura Human Rights Commission, urging it to initiate an independent inquiry into the alleged use of excessive force and violation of human rights by a CRPF officer during a protest held over the NEET controversy.

In a formal complaint submitted on Wednesday, TPYC President Neel Kamal Saha alleged that CRPF officer Ram Kumar, a three-star rank officer attached to the 140 Battalion, engaged in misconduct while deployed at a police barricade on Akhaura Road between RMS Chowmuhani and IGM Hospital on June 15.

According to the complaint, a Youth Congress procession began from Congress Bhavan in Agartala around 12:30 pm and proceeded peacefully through parts of the city before reaching the barricaded area near RMS Chowmuhani. Senior police officials, including the Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station and the SDPO (Sadar), were reportedly present along with CRPF personnel.

The Youth Congress claimed that while protesters were raising slogans demanding accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak and seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the CRPF officer allegedly ordered and carried out a lathi-charge without provocation. The complaint further alleges that abusive language was used against demonstrators, including women participants.

TPYC stated that several activists sustained injuries during the incident, ranging from head injuries and fractures to severe bleeding. The organization also accused the officer of inappropriate conduct towards female protesters and claimed that the action was taken without instructions from senior police authorities present at the scene.

Seeking immediate intervention, the Youth Congress has requested the Human Rights Commission to take cognizance of the allegations, conduct a thorough investigation, and recommend appropriate action to ensure accountability and justice for those affected.

The allegations have been raised by the Youth Congress, and an official response from the CRPF or state authorities is awaited.
