Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested two female drug peddlers at Agartala Railway Station on late Saturday night.

The team seized 23.660 kilograms of dry ganja, packed in eight packets and concealed in two trolley bags.

GRP Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das confirmed the arrests and said the accused were preparing to board a train to Chennai via Deoghar. 

During initial interrogation, the duo reportedly admitted that the consignment was destined for sale in Chennai, where the contraband could fetch approximately Rs 7.93 lakh.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Meenakshi Debnath alias Monali (30) who is a resident of Shantirbazar, Subhas Colony, South Tripura district and Sabina Bibi (32) resident of Baktinagar, Janata Para, Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal.

A case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Agartala GRP Police Station. Police sources said further arrests in connection with this case are likely.

Both accused will be produced before the court today.
