Tripura Police on Monday arrested three women after a shocking video showing them chopping off another woman’s hair in Udaipur sub-division of Gomati district went viral on Facebook.
The incident, which drew widespread condemnation on social media, took place in Bhangarpar village. The victim was allegedly tied up by a group of women before her hair was forcibly cut on suspicion of adultery.
Calling the act “barbaric,” Gomati District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar said, “One incident went viral on social media in which a woman was tortured by her in-laws and others. We have registered a case, and three persons — Manju Rani Das (62), Putul Rani Das (50), and Hamida Banu (60) — have been arrested. They will be produced before the court.”
Udaipur Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nirman Das said that after the video surfaced, police teams immediately visited the spot. “It was confirmed to be true. The victim was not at her home yesterday, but her husband lodged a complaint at RK Pur Police Station. Acting on the FIR, we arrested the three accused. Preliminary inquiry suggests the assault stemmed from a family dispute,” the SDPO added.
Police said further investigation is underway.
