Woman held with cannabis, cough syrups worth Rs 9 lakh at Agartala Railway Station

In a major anti-narcotics drive, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Agartala conducted two separate operations at the Agartala Railway Station, leading to the seizure of a significant quantity of controlled substances and the arrest of a woman drug peddler.

According to GRP officer Tapas Das, the first operation took place late Monday night during routine checks on platform number 3, shortly after the arrival of the Agartala-bound Humsafar Express.

Two unclaimed bags were discovered, and upon inspection, officers found 270 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup — a controlled substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The consignment was seized following all legal procedures. The estimated market value of the cough syrup is around ?1.35 lakh.

An investigation has been initiated to identify those involved in the attempted smuggling of the cough syrup.

In a separate operation conducted jointly by the GRP and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), a 29-year-old woman was arrested from the station premises. The accused, identified as Aparna Debbarma, a resident of Karaimura under Bishramganj Police Station in Sepahijala district, was found with 21.490 kilograms of dry cannabis concealed in nine packets inside a trolley bag.

During initial interrogation, Debbarma reportedly confessed that she was planning to transport the consignment to Delhi by train. She also admitted to having smuggled ganja on three previous occasions from different railway stations, though this was her first attempt from Agartala Railway Station. Officials estimate the market value of the seized cannabis in Delhi to be approximately ?7.5 lakh.

A case has been registered against her at the Agartala GRP Police Station under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
