Authorities under Kolkata Police have enforced a strict ban on victory celebrations across the city on Monday, coinciding with the vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. The move aims to prevent unrest and maintain peace during the sensitive counting period.
Officials clarified that the prohibition applies equally to all political parties and groups, with no exceptions. As per the directive, any form of celebration—including rallies, processions, or public gatherings linked to election results—is not allowed throughout the day.
The official notice stated that since the counting process is expected to continue for several hours, maintaining public order and calm remains a priority. Therefore, all celebratory activities have been temporarily suspended within the jurisdiction of the city police.
However, authorities have allowed that victory processions may take place from May 5 onwards, provided organizers obtain prior approval from the respective local police stations. Any such events must strictly follow prescribed guidelines and conditions set by law enforcement.
Police officers across all stations have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement of these rules. Violations could lead to legal action under applicable laws.
As per trends reported around mid-afternoon, candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party were leading in 193 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress was ahead in 95 constituencies. The counting process is ongoing, with final outcomes expected later in the day.
