The streets of Kolkata came alive with the roar of motorcycle engines and a powerful message of unity as the inaugural Joy-Freedom Ride 2026 brought together leaders, law enforcement officers, diplomats, and citizens to honor a partnership forged in sacrifice and strengthened by shared values.
Led by U.S. Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz and West Bengal Cabinet Minister Dilip Ghosh, more than 250 riders embarked on an early morning journey through the heart of the city. The rally, organized as part of the Freedom 250 campaign, celebrated the enduring friendship between India and the United States while paying tribute to the heroes whose courage continues to inspire both nations.
The ride began at the American Center and wound through some of Kolkata's most iconic landmarks, including the Victoria Memorial, Princep Ghat, and Laal Bazar, home to the Kolkata Police Headquarters. Along the route, participants reflected on a shared commitment to freedom, security, and peace.
The event culminated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the American Center, where attendees honored the memory of five Kolkata Police officers who lost their lives defending the Center during the 2002 terrorist attack: Pijush Sarker, Ujjal Burman, Suresh Hembram, Anup Mondal, and Sheikh Ashraf Ali. Their sacrifice remains a symbol of courage and a lasting foundation for the security partnership between India and the United States.
Addressing participants, Consul General Giles-Diaz drew a powerful parallel between the rally and the relationship it celebrated.
"Just as a motorcycle needs two wheels to move forward, the U.S.-India partnership relies on our nations working together," she said. "Our shared vision for a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific drives us forward. This vision requires resilience and vigilance, and dedicated people, like the Kolkata Police. What grew out of the 2002 attack is the network of partners who help us protect the ideas of freedom and peace every day."
The Joy-Freedom Ride was organized in partnership with the U.S. Consulate Kolkata's Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), which promotes security cooperation between U.S. diplomatic missions and the American private sector overseas. The event also showcased the important role of business partners in advancing shared goals, with support from Speed Group, PepsiCo, and Hyatt Regency Hotel Kolkata through logistics, hospitality, and refreshments.
More than a commemorative event, the Joy-Freedom Ride served as a testament to the resilience of a partnership that has grown stronger through cooperation and mutual trust. It celebrated not only a shared history, but also a shared future—one built on collaboration, vigilance, and a commitment to safeguarding democratic values.
As riders returned to the American Center, the message of the day was unmistakable: the bonds between India and the United States continue to move forward, powered by remembrance, strengthened by partnership, and guided by a common purpose.
The 2026 Joy-Freedom Ride marks the beginning of what organizers hope will become an annual tradition—a living tribute to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and a powerful reminder that freedom, security, and friendship are journeys best traveled together.
