Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday, citing health concerns and the need to follow medical advice.
His resignation, submitted under Article 67(a) of the Constitution, takes immediate effect.
Dhankhar, who assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022, previously served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.
In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar expressed profound gratitude for the support he received during his tenure.
"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately," he wrote. He also thanked the President for her “unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship” they shared.
Dhankhar extended special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, noting that their cooperation had been “invaluable.” “I have learned much during my time in office,” he remarked.
Acknowledging the Parliament, Dhankhar said, “The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament will always remain embedded in my memory.”
Reflecting on his tenure, he said it was a privilege to serve during a transformative phase in India's history. “It has been deeply satisfying to witness and partake in the country’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented development,” he noted.
“As I demit this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat's global rise and phenomenal achievements. I hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” Dhankhar concluded.
