Panic gripped Serampur on Friday after the body of an unidentified person was recovered from the Manu River in Ward No. 2 of the city under Unakoti District

According to local sources, the body was first spotted floating in the river early in the morning. Strong currents prevented recovery attempts as it drifted under the Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Bridge in Sonamura. Finally, around noon, it got stuck in the Serampur stretch of the river, where rescue teams managed to retrieve it.

Civil Defense personnel, BSF, NDRF, Kailashahar police, firefighters, and officials of the sub-divisional administration rushed to the spot. Local residents also assisted in the recovery operation. After prolonged efforts, the body was pulled out and sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.

Kailashahar Police Station OC Tapas Malakar, Deputy Collector Hemanta Dhar of the SDM office, fire department staff, BSF officials, and other senior officers were present during the operation.

The identity of the deceased remains unknown. Authorities have not yet determined how the body entered the river or its origin. Kailashahar Police have launched a probe into the matter.
