Two held in Tripura firing case during Village Committee polls; police hunt for more accused

Tripura Police have arrested two persons in connection with the firing incident during the Village Committee elections in Warrangbari on September 28, in which a Tipra Motha Party candidate and two others were injured.

The arrests came days after the incident, which had triggered protests and road blockades by Tipra Motha Party workers, who had also approached the State Election Commission seeking swift action against those responsible.

Gomati District Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Debnath said the two accused were arrested from Champaknagar and Takajala areas of Sepahijala district on Wednesday night following credible inputs about their alleged involvement in the firing.

“A case was registered following the firing incident during the Village Committee election in Warrangbari. Based on credible information, two persons allegedly involved in the incident were arrested from Champaknagar and Takajala areas of Sepahijala district,” Debnath said.

The accused were produced before a court on Thursday, and police sought their remand for further interrogation as the investigation continues.

The arrests were made in a joint operation involving the Udaipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer, the officer-in-charge of RK Pur Police Station and personnel from Sepahijala district police.

According to police, efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other persons who may have been involved in the incident.

The firing took place during polling for the Village Committee elections in Warrangbari on September 28 and left three people injured, including a Tipra Motha Party candidate.

Following the incident, Tipra Motha supporters blocked roads and raised concerns over the security situation. Party representatives also met the State Election Commissioner and demanded the arrest of those responsible, giving the authorities a 72-hour deadline for action.
