Poor road condition triggers road blockade in Dhalai, commuters suffer

Residents of Krishna Kumar Para under Kulaikachhimchhara village in Ambassa subdivision blocked the Ambassa–Kamalpur road at Nalichhara on Thursday, protesting the prolonged deterioration of a local road and a damaged bridge.

According to local residents, the road has remained submerged and practically unusable for nearly six months due to water from a nearby stream, while the condition of the bridge has also deteriorated. They alleged that repeated complaints to the concerned department failed to bring any concrete action, prompting them to resort to a road blockade.

The blockade continued for around two hours, causing significant disruption to traffic on both sides of the road. Several vehicles and commuters were reportedly stranded during the protest.

The situation drew further criticism after vehicles carrying schoolchildren and a woman returning home after undergoing surgery at a hospital were allegedly stopped during the blockade. The woman reportedly had to walk home after her vehicle was unable to pass.

Around two hours after the blockade began, RD department SDO Bimal Barman reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. He assured them that repair work on the road would begin from Thursday, following which the residents withdrew the blockade.

The incident has once again brought attention to the disruption caused by road blockades, with commuters questioning whether ordinary people should be made to suffer for administrative delays or unresolved local grievances.

Residents have demanded prompt completion of the road and bridge repair work and urged the authorities to ensure that essential and emergency vehicles are not obstructed during future protests.
