In a fresh crackdown on illegal cattle smuggling, Tripura Police in Pecharthal today apprehended two youths transporting ten domestic cows in an extremely inhumane manner.
Unlike previous cases involving Burmese cattle, this time the smugglers were using a single magic van to carry the animals without any valid documents.
The incident took place on the Dharmanagar–Fatikrai route, where Police, during routine naka checking, intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number TR02K-1934. The vehicle was found to be overloaded with cattle — ten cows crammed into the small vehicle along with a driver and co-driver.
Upon investigation, police identified the accused as Shahin Islam (20), the driver, and Shamsul Islam, the co-driver — both residents of the Fatikrai area.
The police seized the vehicle and immediately arrested the duo for illegal transportation and cruelty to animals.
The cattle have been handed over to the Gurukshanath Gaushala in Dharmanagar, and a formal case has been registered at the police station.
Officer-in-Charge Suman Chatterjee stated that such operations would continue to be carried out rigorously in the police station jurisdiction.
However, the incident has raised serious questions about the efficiency and integrity of police forces in the North District. The vehicle reportedly passed through multiple checkpoints under the jurisdiction of Dharmanagar, Bagbasa, and Panisagar police stations before being intercepted in Pecharthal.
