Based on a tip-off from a confidential source, West Police Station conducted a late-night raid on Wednesday in the area adjacent to Pragati School and arrested two drug peddlers along with a substantial quantity of heroin. The incident has created widespread tension and concern among local residents.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Bunty Nayek and Sujit Roy, both residents of the Radhanagar area, according to police sources.
Police officials stated that the duo had been running an illegal drug trade for a long time in and around Pragati School and nearby localities. They allegedly targeted young people, selling heroin and other narcotic substances. After the matter came to the notice of the police, discreet surveillance was initiated. Acting on specific and reliable information, the police carried out the raid on Wednesday night.
During the operation, the two accused were detained and searched, leading to the recovery of a significant quantity of heroin. Police estimated the market value of the seized narcotics to be over Rs 1 lakh. The contraband has been confiscated.
Officer-in-Charge of West Police Station, Rana Chatterjee, said that interrogation of the arrested persons has revealed several crucial details related to the drug network. Based on this information, police expect to arrest more individuals involved in the racket. He added that investigations are underway to identify other associates, the source of the narcotics, and the areas where the drugs were being supplied.
On Thursday, the accused were produced before the court with a plea for police remand. The investigation has been intensified, and police have assured that stricter measures will be taken as part of the ongoing anti-drug drive.
