The Tripura government has formally proposed a new 178.72 km railway line to the Ministry of Railways, aiming to connect Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Mohanpur, Agartala, Sonamura, and Belonia.
The project comes after the North Frontier Railway (NFR) completed a survey at Maligaon to assess the feasibility of expanding railway connectivity in the region.
Based on the survey findings, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for approximately 170 km of new track, with the estimated cost pegged at ₹3,356.5 crore.
Addressing the state Assembly, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed that the DPR has been submitted to the Railway Board for financial approval. He added that the proposal is under active review by the Ministry of Railways.
Minister Chowdhury also mentioned that Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha has engaged with the central government regarding the project, and he himself has held discussions with the Union Railway Minister to push the initiative forward. He stressed that the state government is working to ensure that construction can commence as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted efforts to extend railway connectivity to parts of Tripura that have so far been excluded from the rail network, signaling a major step toward comprehensive regional development.
