The Tripura government has called for intensified and coordinated efforts to reduce road accidents and improve safety for commuters and pedestrians across the state.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury made the appeal while chairing the 18th meeting of the State Road Safety Council at the Secretariat here on Wednesday.
The meeting brought together senior officials from several key departments, including Health, PWD, Finance, Revenue and Disaster Management and Transport. The Director of Higher Education, Superintendent of Traffic Police, and District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police from all eight districts also participated virtually.
Reviewing various aspects of road safety, the minister stressed that preventing accidents required close coordination between departments as well as effective implementation of preventive measures at the ground level.
Chowdhury said ensuring safer roads could not be achieved through administrative action alone. He emphasised the need for greater public awareness, responsible behaviour by road users and active participation from citizens.
“Road safety is the collective responsibility of all of us,” he said, urging officials to strengthen coordination and take timely preventive action.
Later, the Transport Department organised a programme at Conference Hall No. 1 of the Secretariat to recognise individuals who had helped accident victims receive emergency medical attention.
The ‘Rahbir’ or Good Samaritan award was presented to people who had assisted road accident victims and helped transport them to hospitals without delay. Each recipient received Rs 25,000 in cash along with a certificate.
The awardees included Kajal Debnath and Prasenjit Bhowmik jointly, Ashesh Das, Khurshid Mia and Ajit Das from Gomati district; Satyajit Kumar Shil and Satyaranjan Debnath from Dhalai district; and Latika Sinha from Unakoti district.
Addressing the gathering, Chowdhury said timely assistance to accident victims could make a crucial difference in saving lives. He urged people not to hesitate when confronted with a road accident and to help injured persons reach medical facilities at the earliest possible opportunity.
