In a move aimed at addressing the shortage of teaching staff and ensuring uninterrupted academic activities, the Tripura Education (Higher) Department has permitted government general degree colleges, professional and technical degree colleges, and diploma-level technical institutes to engage guest and visiting lecturers for the 2026-27 academic year.
As per a memorandum issued on September 25, the institutions can engage such lecturers for a period of 11 months. The appointments will be made on merit while adhering to the reservation policy of the State Government.
Under the approved arrangement, guest lecturers will receive an honorarium of Rs 500 per class, with the number of classes capped at 72 per month. Accordingly, the maximum monthly honorarium will be Rs 36,000.
The department has made it clear that guest lecturers may be assigned academic responsibilities in addition to classroom teaching by the concerned institutions. However, direct teaching undertaken by an individual guest lecturer must not exceed 72 classes in any month during the entire period of engagement.
The colleges and technical institutes have also been instructed to comply strictly with the relevant UGC and AICTE norms while making the appointments.
To prevent simultaneous engagements, a guest lecturer appointed at one institution will not be allowed to serve as a guest lecturer at another college or institute at the same time.
The expenditure towards honorarium will be met from the funds allocated to the respective institutions. The department has also issued Annexure-A, detailing the number of guest/visiting lecturers sanctioned for individual colleges and institutes.
Principals and principal-in-charges have been directed to undertake the recruitment strictly within the sanctioned numbers.
The decision was taken with the concurrence of the Finance Department through communications issued on September 7 and September 16, 2026.
