Tripura Police seized more than 31 kg of suspected ganja in two separate operations in Agartala and arrested three youths, officials said on Wednesday.
In the first incident, personnel of Srinagar Police Station carried out a raid in the Malyanagar area following a tip-off and recovered 6.3 kg of suspected ganja from a bag allegedly being carried by 23-year-old Nayan Das, a resident of Manughat.
Police said Das was intercepted and subjected to a body search, during which nothing objectionable was found. However, a subsequent search of the bag led to the recovery of three packets wrapped in black material, which allegedly contained ganja. The consignment was seized and Das was taken into custody.
Investigators are questioning the accused to ascertain where the contraband was allegedly being transported and whether other persons were involved.
In another operation conducted around 1 am, Amtali Police intercepted a white Aura car during naka checking on the bypass road near Amtali Police Station and recovered approximately 25 kg of dry ganja.
Two 19-year-old youths, identified as Jit Deb and Bishal Deb, both residents of Chandinamura, were arrested in connection with the recovery.
According to police, the vehicle, bearing registration number TR 01 BW 0764, attracted suspicion during routine checking. When signalled to stop, the driver allegedly attempted to speed away, following which police gave chase and intercepted the car.
A search of the vehicle allegedly led to the recovery of two large bags containing around 25 kg of suspected ganja. Police estimated the market value of the seized contraband at approximately Rs 5 lakh.
Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee said the vehicle was intercepted during routine checking and the subsequent search resulted in the recovery.
During preliminary interrogation, police reportedly learnt that the consignment had allegedly been sourced from a border-area location and was intended to be taken to the Agartala railway station area. Investigators suspect it was to be concealed there before being transported by train to another state. Police said these claims are part of the investigation and will be subject to verification through the legal process.
Amtali Police have registered a suo motu case under the NDPS Act, numbered 109/2026. The arrested youths are expected to be produced before a court, while investigators are likely to seek custody for further interrogation.
