Tripura is set to expand education in traditional systems of medicine with the introduction of an Ayurvedic Medical College and a Homeopathic College during the ongoing academic session, National Health Mission State Mission Director Saju Wahid said on Saturday.
Speaking at a programme organised to mark the 11th Ayurvedic Day, Wahid said this year’s observance carries special significance as the state is moving ahead with new institutions dedicated to traditional medicine.
He said the occasion should be seen not merely as a celebration of Ayurveda, but as an opportunity to strengthen and modernise the system while preserving its traditional foundations. Greater focus, he added, should be placed on evidence-based practices, research and the wider development of Ayurveda.
Wahid also acknowledged the contribution of Ayurvedic medical officers, pharmacists, technicians and practitioners in providing healthcare services and congratulated them on the occasion.
West District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, who attended the programme, said Ayurveda represents more than a method of treating illness and also offers principles for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and living in harmony with nature.
He noted that several practices and resources commonly used in Indian households have their roots in Ayurveda and form part of the country’s traditional knowledge system.
Kumar said increasing pollution and concerns surrounding adverse reactions to certain medicines have highlighted the importance of exploring and promoting safe and healthy practices. He stressed the need to create greater awareness about Ayurveda and encourage healthier lifestyles.
Calling for wider promotion of Ayurvedic education, particularly among children and young people, Kumar said collective efforts were needed to strengthen the traditional system of medicine and increase its reach across society.
