National Cadet Corps (NCC) training is helping students develop discipline and a sense of civic responsibility, while an increasing number of youngsters are joining the organisation voluntarily, Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das said on Sunday.
Das was speaking to reporters at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala during the valedictory ceremony of a 15-day NCC camp. He attended the programme as the chief guest.
“The NCC shows students the way to become good citizens. Students have now realised the importance of NCC, and its impact can also be seen in their marksheets. Today, students are joining NCC training out of their own interest,” Das said.
He said universities and colleges have an important role in creating opportunities for students to participate in NCC activities and encouraging them to take part in programmes that complement classroom education.
The 15-day camp was organised as part of NCC training for cadets and concluded with the valedictory ceremony at the youth hostel.
Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General of the NCC and Director of the NCC Directorate, North Eastern Region, and Lieutenant Colonel Rohan Gupta, Commanding Officer of the 15th Battalion, NCC, were among those present at the programme.
Prof. Das was felicitated during the ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor said the growing willingness among students to join NCC reflected a greater awareness of the organisation’s role beyond conventional academic education.
NCC training provides students with exposure to activities aimed at developing discipline, leadership, teamwork and a sense of service. Educational institutions, therefore, have a significant role in facilitating students’ participation in such programmes, Das said.
The camp brought together NCC cadets for 15 days of training and activities before concluding with the valedictory function.
The programme at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel also brought together senior NCC officials and cadets, providing an opportunity to underline the organisation’s role in youth development and civic engagement.
