With preparations gaining momentum for the upcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in Tripura, BJP state president Abhishek Debroy on Wednesday expressed confidence that his party would win all 21 urban local bodies, claiming that the opposition lacked public support to challenge the ruling party.
Targeting the proposed CPI(M)-Congress alliance, Debroy said the understanding had failed to gain public acceptance. He described the opposition's uncertainty over seat-sharing and electoral strategy as evidence of political confusion and an existential crisis.
"People are not ready to accept the CPI(M)-Congress alliance. They cannot decide whether to contest together or separately, which reflects their political uncertainty," he said.
In contrast, Debroy claimed that the BJP had completed its election preparations, finalised its candidate selection and received the necessary directions from the central leadership.
He indicated that candidates for most urban local bodies would be announced on November 5, while the list for Agartala Municipal Corporation could be declared on November 5 or 6.
The BJP president also predicted a strong response from young supporters during the party's campaign in Agartala.
Referring to the joint rally organised by the CPI(M) and Congress, he claimed that the turnout failed to reflect the combined organisational strength of the two parties, indicating a lack of public enthusiasm for the alliance.
Debroy also accused the opposition of attempting to weaken democratic institutions and said the BJP would continue its political fight against such efforts.
Highlighting the government's development record, he said voters could compare the condition of urban local bodies a decade ago with the changes brought under the present BJP government.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manik Saha's leadership for the state's development initiatives, reiterating the party's commitment to its 'Nation First' principle.
Maintaining that the BJP was prepared for any electoral arrangement among opposition parties, Debroy reiterated his confidence in winning all 21 urban local bodies.
