Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das on Friday assured that the state will not face any fish shortage despite restrictions on imports from Bangladesh. He emphasized that Tripura’s own fish cultivation is sufficient to meet local demand, and the state also imports fish from West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, ensuring ample supply.

 “A notice from the central government has imposed restrictions on importing certain products. However, even without fish imports from Bangladesh, Tripura will not face any shortage. Our fish production within the state covers 100% of our needs. Additionally, imports from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal more than suffice,” the minister said.

The statement came after Sudhangshu Das chaired a review meeting of the Animal Resource Development (ARD) Department for the 2025-26 financial year, alongside the department’s Director, Neeraj Kumar Chanchal.

During the meeting, attended by senior and district-level officials, the focus was on efficient implementation of the upcoming year’s budget to benefit the people. The review also covered progress made in the previous financial year, evaluating successes and identifying areas for improvement. The department is working towards self-sufficiency not only in fish but also in milk, eggs, and meat, while ensuring proper animal healthcare under the ARD.

The minister further informed that decisions from the last meeting have been put into action, with district-level meetings already underway. He highlighted that the department successfully utilized around 99% of the allocated state budget in the last financial year, with no pending funds.
