The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress on Wednesday staged a protest outside the State Women's Commission office, alleging a rise in crimes against women across the state and demanding a judicial inquiry into the death of Manisha Das, a young employee of Shantiniketan Medical College.
Addressing the gathering, Mahila Congress leaders alleged that incidents of rape and gang rape involving victims ranging from young girls to elderly women aged 60–65 have been increasing in Tripura. They accused the state government of failing to ensure the safety and security of women.
The protesters also questioned the State Women's Commission over its handling of the death of Manisha Das. They alleged that the Commission termed the case a suicide without conducting a proper investigation, and claimed that such a conclusion could shield those responsible. The Mahila Congress reiterated its demand for a judicial investigation into the case.
The organization recalled that it had earlier laid siege to the Director General of Police (DGP) office on June 19 to press for a judicial probe, but alleged that the state government had not taken any meaningful action.
Criticising the BJP-led state government, the Mahila Congress alleged that despite promoting the slogan "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao," crimes against women continue unabated. The protesters accused the government of being insensitive to issues of women's safety and welfare.
The demonstrators also criticized the State Women's Commission, alleging that it has failed to speak out against violence against women and has functioned as a spokesperson for the ruling government rather than as an independent body. They demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairperson of the State Women's Commission.
The Mahila Congress stated that its agitation would continue until its demands, including a judicial inquiry into the Manisha Das death case, are met.
The protest was led by Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mrs. Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty, General Secretary Khumtiya Debbarma, Sadar District Mahila Congress President Mrs. Rupa Roy Das, along with other women leaders and party workers.
