Three separate complaints have been lodged against former Tripura Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar at two police stations in West Tripura’s Mohanpur subdivision, accusing him of making remarks that could allegedly provoke unrest and threaten public order.

Jayanta Debnath and Indrajit Datta submitted complaints at Sidhai Police Station, while Rajishing Debbarma filed another complaint at Lefunga Police Station.

The complaints relate to remarks allegedly made by Sarkar at a political programme in Agartala on August 10 during a movement against the State and Central governments. The statements were subsequently reported by electronic media and published in a local newspaper on August 11.

The complainants have alleged that Sarkar warned that the agitation would intensify if the governments failed to address an 11-point charter of demands. They particularly cited his reported statement, “The country and state will go on the path of militant movement,” claiming that it could be interpreted as an appeal for a more aggressive form of agitation.

According to the complaints, such remarks could potentially influence supporters to intensify protests and create disturbances affecting public peace and tranquillity. The complainants also expressed concern that anti-social elements could misuse the statements to incite violence, obstruct government officials or engage in other unlawful activities.

Seeking police intervention, the complainants have requested registration of a case under Sections 147, 148, 152 and 353(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable provisions concerning abetment, criminal conspiracy and offences that may come to light during investigation.

The complainants have urged the police to take prompt action, citing concerns over the possible impact of the alleged remarks on public order and security.
