With the political landscape in Tripura gearing up for a series of electoral battles, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday called for a stronger grassroots organisation, urging party workers to identify organisational weaknesses, plug gaps and improve coordination at the booth level.
Addressing a workers’ conference in Agartala, Roy Barman said the Congress was holding such meetings across Assembly constituencies as part of an organisational exercise aimed at reviewing the party’s strengths and shortcomings and preparing a roadmap for future political activities.
“These are not routine meetings. We are discussing our strengths, weaknesses and the way forward for our organisation,” he said.
Roy Barman said the immediate objective was to make the Congress organisation more systematic and effective at the grassroots, particularly by strengthening booth-level activities and improving coordination among workers. He said the party needed to assess where its organisational machinery was falling short and collectively work to overcome those challenges.
The Congress MLA also indicated that the party’s formal preparations for the upcoming urban local body elections would begin once the election schedule is officially announced.
The organisational exercise assumes political significance as the Congress seeks to consolidate its grassroots presence in Tripura ahead of future electoral contests. The party has recently stepped up booth-level organisational activities, including training for Booth Level Agents on electoral-roll and election-related responsibilities.
Roy Barman also criticised the BJP’s organisational functioning, making allegations regarding the distribution of responsibilities at booth and state levels. His remarks come amid the Congress’s wider political campaign against the BJP-led government and its efforts to expand its organisational base.
The Congress MLA maintained that the party has continued to register support in several booths despite limited organisational activity and shortages of workers in some areas. He argued that a more coordinated and structured organisation could help the party strengthen its political presence.
“We have to understand where the gaps are, identify our weaknesses and find ways to overcome these challenges,” Roy Barman said.
The latest organisational drive comes at a time when Tripura Congress has been intensifying its political activities on electoral and governance-related issues, including its recent campaign against the Election Commission.
