The Tripura Pradesh Congress has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government, accusing it of misleading the public and failing to fulfill key electoral promises even after 11 years in power.

Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan on Friday, Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that the Modi government, backed by the RSS, is engaging in propaganda rather than addressing the real issues plaguing the country.

Citing official figures, Chakraborty said that the unemployment rate in Tripura currently stands at 14.3 percent—one of the highest in the country. 

“Back in 2014, the national unemployment rate was 5.4 percent. Today it is 7.9 percent as per government data, while the ILO report places it at 9.3 percent,” he said. “Despite tall promises made before elections, the BJP has utterly failed to address unemployment.”

He accused the Modi government of avoiding accountability. 

“Instead of answering tough questions about unemployment, inflation, and rural distress, the Prime Minister is celebrating what he calls the 'immortality' of 11 years of his rule—spending crores of rupees from public funds on PR campaigns while evading press conferences and Parliament debates,” Chakraborty added.

Taking a dig at the Centre’s disinvestment policy, he said the 2025 budget projects a target of Rs 10 lakh crore through disinvestment, while over 9.64 lakh posts in central government departments remain vacant. “The government is more interested in selling off national assets than in providing employment.”

Chakraborty also highlighted distress in the agriculture sector. “No data has been published on farmer incomes since 2019-20. Today, only 20.7 percent of farmers rely solely on agriculture, while 42.4 percent have been forced to seek alternative livelihoods,” he said.

Referring to crop insurance, he stated that while the scheme has failed to benefit a large section of farmers, insurance companies—only two of which are government-owned—have made profits exceeding Rs 50,000 crore in the past five years.

"The minimum support price (MSP) growth rate has halved—from 1.17 percent during 2004–2014 to just 0.53 percent between 2014–2025,” he said, adding that 1,04,474 farmers had committed suicide between 2020 and 2024 alone, due to mounting debt and lack of support.

He also pointed to an increase in bad loans during the Modi regime. “The number of defaulters in public sector banks has increased to 2,665, many of whom are close to the ruling party. At the same time, corporate loan waivers have crossed Rs 6.5 lakh crore,” Chakraborty alleged.

Concluding his address, he demanded immediate action from the government to address unemployment, rural distress, and institutional corruption, warning that the people of Tripura and the rest of the country are growing increasingly disillusioned.
