Kailashahar constituency MLA Birajit Sinha has announced that he will file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Kailashahar Municipal Council if appropriate legal action is not taken over the demolition of a nearly completed market shed.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Sinha alleged serious misuse of public funds in connection with the incident. According to him, during the financial year 2020–21, the municipal council had undertaken a project to construct a market shed for vegetable vendors in Kailashahar market area. The decision was made after consultations with local traders, and approximately 95% of the construction work had already been completed using BADP (Border Area Development Programme) funds.
However, just when the project was nearing completion and awaiting inauguration, the structure was allegedly dismantled following a verbal directive from the municipal authorities. Sinha claimed that a group of youths arrived in broad daylight with multiple vehicles and removed parts of the structure.
Condemning the incident, the MLA stated that if the municipal authorities fail to lodge a police complaint within the next few days, he will move the court by filing a PIL.
Local vendors have also expressed concern and outrage. A trader from the Hawkers’ Corner area said that several youths came with four to five vehicles and dismantled the structure openly during the day. “When we asked them what was happening, they did not respond and continued removing everything. Those responsible must be identified and legal action should be taken,” the vendor said.
The incident has sparked public anger, with many questioning accountability and transparency in the use of taxpayer money.
