A delegation of the Tripura Congress on Tuesday met the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Agartala, demanding action against an Assistant Commandant over allegations of excessive force and abusive language during a protest linked to NEET issues.
According to Congress leaders, tensions escalated on Monday when the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress held a demonstration in Agartala. During the protest, CRPF personnel allegedly used lathi charge to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries to several participants.
The party also alleged that Assistant Commandant Ram Kumar used inappropriate and abusive language, including towards women protestors. A video of the incident reportedly circulated on social media, further intensifying the controversy.
The delegation included Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Asish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, and Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha. They submitted a memorandum to the CRPF DIG along with what they described as supporting evidence.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Sudip Roy Barman alleged that the use of force was unprovoked and resulted in serious injuries to multiple workers. He also strongly condemned the alleged use of abusive language, calling it unacceptable, particularly against women participants.
He further claimed that no proper authorization was issued for the lathi charge and said the party has lodged an FIR against the Assistant Commandant. The delegation demanded disciplinary action and a formal inquiry into the incident.
According to the Congress leaders, the CRPF DIG has assured them that the matter will be examined and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
