A higher-level meeting between Tripura and Mizoram is likely to be convened soon to find a solution to the long-standing border dispute, Tripura Home Secretary Abhishek Singh said on Monday following detailed discussions between officials of the two states in Agartala.

The latest meeting was part of the preliminary-level discussions initiated between Tripura and Mizoram, with the first phase held on September 9. The talks focused on the specific portion of land under dispute and the historical and official documents submitted by both sides.

According to Singh, the dispute concerns a relatively small stretch of land in the Phudunsei Village Council area.

“An open discussion was held on the Tripura-Mizoram border dispute. We observed that the issue is related to a small portion of land,” Singh said.

Officials from the Survey of India, Tripura Revenue Department, Tripura Police, as well as the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of North Tripura, attended the discussions.

Singh said both sides placed their respective documents and records before the meeting for examination.

“From our end, we presented our documents, and Mizoram also presented its documents. Based on these, we held discussions,” he said.

The Home Secretary maintained that the disputed stretch is currently under Tripura’s possession. He added that the documents available with the Tripura government, along with records of the Survey of India, indicate that the area falls within Tripura’s jurisdiction.

Following the meeting, a report has been prepared, and both states are expected to submit their respective reports to their governments. The reports will form the basis for further discussions between the two sides.

Expressing optimism over the next stage of the process, Singh said a higher-level meeting could be held soon to take the matter forward and work towards an amicable resolution of the border dispute.
