Tripura BJP sharpens ULB poll strategy, plans statewide campaign against Opposition; hold meeting

Stepping up its political and organisational preparations for the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections, the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun charting out a strategy focused on electoral readiness, grassroots mobilisation and a statewide campaign to counter what it described as misleading narratives propagated by opposition parties.

The party’s roadmap was discussed at a high-level organisational meeting held at the State Guest House on Monday, chaired by Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha. The meeting was attended by BJP National General Secretary and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, state president Abhishek Debroy, General Secretary (Organisation) Ravindra Raju, Tripura in-charge Mriganka Deo Barman, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and presidents of various party wings.

With the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections emerging as a key organisational priority, the meeting focused on strengthening the party’s structure, assigning responsibilities to leaders and coordinating activities across its different organisational units. The discussions also covered the implementation of programmes outlined by the BJP’s central leadership.

Speaking about the deliberations, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the party had received directions from the central leadership on organisational matters and their implementation. He said responsibilities had been assigned and discussions held on the steps required to strengthen the organisation and prepare for the forthcoming local body elections.

Biplab Kumar Deb said the meeting centred on two major priorities — preparations for the AMC elections and the implementation of seven nationwide programmes announced by the BJP. He indicated that the party would intensify its engagement with the public through a series of outreach initiatives beyond its regular organisational activities.

Targeting the Opposition, Deb alleged that certain political forces were attempting to weaken democratic institutions and create instability through misinformation. He said the BJP planned to take its counter-narrative directly to the people through public meetings and other outreach activities.

The proposed campaign is expected to include foot marches, press conferences and interactions with different sections of society, particularly students and young people. According to Deb, the organisational framework and implementation of these programmes were discussed at the meeting, while the state leadership would announce the detailed schedule later.

The controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls also featured in the party’s political messaging. State BJP president Abhishek Debroy criticised the Opposition’s objections to the exercise, arguing that similar electoral roll revision processes had been undertaken during earlier Congress-led governments.

Accusing opposition parties of presenting misleading information on the issue, Debroy said the BJP would seek to explain its position to voters through direct public engagement.

The meeting reflects the Tripura BJP’s effort to advance its electoral preparations on two fronts: consolidating its organisational machinery ahead of the urban local body polls and expanding its public outreach on issues dominating the political discourse.

With further details of the proposed campaign expected from the state leadership, the party is looking to translate organisational discussions into coordinated activities at the grassroots level in the run-up to the elections.
