In a deeply troubling case that has sparked concern and anger among local residents, an elderly man, Sukumar Debnath, is allegedly living in deplorable conditions in the North Mura area under Aralia Gram Panchayat in Charilam block, with claims that his government-employed son and daughter-in-law have failed to provide him with adequate food, financial assistance and basic care.
According to allegations raised by local residents, Sukumar has been living in a severely dilapidated room without electricity or a fan. Villagers have described the living conditions as inhumane, claiming that the accommodation is unfit for an elderly person and falls below even the basic standards of shelter and dignity.
The elderly man's son, Titen Debnath, is reportedly a government graduate teacher at Ailmara High School under the jurisdiction of the Silachari School Inspector. His wife, Pompa Debnath, is also reportedly employed as a government graduate teacher at Jirania High School.
Locals allege that despite both being government employees, the couple have failed to provide the elderly man with regular meals or financial support. According to residents, Sukumar is left to prepare food for himself by lighting a fire, even as he struggles to cope with his difficult living conditions.
The absence of electricity and a fan has reportedly added to his discomfort, particularly during periods of intense heat. Residents have expressed concern about the elderly man's health, safety and overall well-being, questioning how he is managing his daily life without adequate assistance.
The situation has triggered widespread resentment among villagers, who have questioned the alleged treatment of a father who devoted years of his life to raising his son. Some residents have expressed disbelief that an elderly parent could be left to live in such conditions while his children are reportedly financially secure.
The case has also prompted broader questions about family responsibility and the moral obligations of those entrusted with educating society. Teachers are widely regarded as role models who help shape the values and character of future generations. Against this backdrop, residents have questioned the apparent contradiction between the responsibilities associated with the teaching profession and the allegations surrounding the elderly man's treatment.
However, the allegations against the son and daughter-in-law have not been independently verified, and their responses were not available at the time of writing.
