Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has approached Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, alleging serious lapses in his security arrangements and accusing Superintendent of Police (Security) Amitabha Paul of partiality, communal bias and financial corruption.
In a two-page letter submitted on Tuesday, the legislator representing the 24-Ramchandraghat Assembly Constituency sought appropriate action against the senior police officer, claiming that his personal safety had been compromised due to the alleged arbitrary withdrawal of his Personal Security Officers (PSOs).
Debbarma stated that he had been left without security personnel for several days despite representing a remote, hilly constituency that he considers vulnerable from a security perspective.
According to the letter, his PSO, Sukesh Debbarma, was withdrawn on October 10 without prior notice. The MLA said he subsequently lodged a complaint against the personnel on October 13, seeking an impartial inquiry into the matter.
Alleging that his grievances were not adequately addressed by the SP Security office, Debbarma said he surrendered his two remaining PSOs at around 3 pm on October 23 in protest, directing them to report to the concerned office. He claimed that he had remained without any security cover since then.
The MLA further alleged that the repeated changes in his security personnel were intended to exert psychological pressure on him. He maintained that neither he nor the department had raised complaints against the personnel deployed for his protection, questioning the rationale behind the repeated withdrawals and transfers.
In his representation, Debbarma also criticised the functioning of the security wing, alleging discriminatory treatment in the deployment and transfer of police personnel. He claimed that certain personnel continued to enjoy assignments with VIPs and VVIPs for periods ranging from three years to as long as eight to ten years, while others were allegedly denied similar facilities.
"There is no implemented transfer policy for police persons," the MLA stated in the letter, raising questions about the alleged lack of uniformity in the department's personnel management.
Referring to past incidents of political violence in Tripura, Debbarma named former MLAs Parimal Saha, Madhusudhan (Bhola) Saha and Gautam Datta, as well as former minister Bimal Sinha. He cited these cases to underline his concerns over the possible consequences of alleged negligence and bias in security arrangements.
The legislator urged the Governor to initiate appropriate action against SP Security Amitabha Paul over the allegations of partiality, communal bias and corruption. These allegations are contained in the MLA's representation, and an independent response from the officer or the police administration was not included in the information available.
The letter, dated October 27, was received by the Governor's Secretariat at Lok Bhavan in Agartala, according to the receipt stamp mentioned in the document.
The matter has brought the state's security arrangements for elected representatives under scrutiny, with the MLA seeking intervention from the Governor to address his concerns and restore accountability in the security administration.
