The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, including Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb, has vehemently condemned the recent vandalism at Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Shahjadpur, Bangladesh.

The leaders called for strict and exemplary punishment against the perpetrators and urged the caretaker government of Bangladesh to act immediately.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed deep anguish over the incident, describing it as a direct assault on the shared cultural legacy of India and Bangladesh.
“Miscreants recently attacked and vandalized the ancestral home of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj. This is a highly condemnable act and a matter of national shame,” Dr. Saha said.
“Tagore, who composed the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh, is a symbol of our intertwined heritage. Such an attack on his residence — a historic site of immense cultural value — cannot be overlooked. The Bangladesh caretaker government must take swift and strict action against those responsible,” he added.

Former Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb also strongly criticized the incident, describing it as a tragic blow to the subcontinent’s cultural conscience.
“The attack on 'Kacharibari', now known as the Rabindra Museum, is a dark chapter in the cultural history of Bangladesh,” said Deb.
“Rabi Thakur is a timeless figure who transcends caste, religion, and language. The desecration of a site so closely associated with him reflects the rise of intolerance and hatred. Such actions are damaging Bangladesh’s global image and pushing it toward cultural and moral decay,” he added.

Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath also condemned the incident, expressing concern over the increasing instances of cultural violence in the region.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Pradesh BJP had planned a protest rally to denounce the attack, but it was postponed following the recent Air India flight crash.
“We believe the attack on Tagore’s ancestral house was premeditated. However, in light of the tragic Air India crash, we decided to postpone our protest rally,” said BJP state general secretary Amit Rakshit.

He also alleged that the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, has been making provocative statements against India and engaging in activities that reflect an “anti-India” stance.
“The assault on Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s home is part of a larger conspiracy aimed at disrupting the cultural harmony between our nations,” Rakshit alleged.
