Four persons, including three migrant labourers from Jharkhand, have been arrested in Belonia subdivision for their alleged involvement in the death of a 27-year-old brick kiln worker following a clash earlier this week, police said on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Bhakta Das.
According to police, the arrests were made after the victim’s wife, Kabita Das, lodged a complaint at the PR Bari police station following her husband’s death during treatment at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala.
Officer-in-Charge of PR Bari police station Sanjit Sen said an FIR was registered after the complaint named four persons in connection with the incident. Acting on the complaint, police detained all the accused shortly afterwards.
The arrested persons were identified as Ajay Orang, Ramlal Orang, Guddu and Basudeb Das. Police said three of the accused were migrant labourers from Jharkhand while one was a local.
According to investigators, the incident stemmed from a dispute that took place on March 5 after workers at the Kalimata Brick Field were paid their wages.
Police said an altercation broke out between the accused persons and the victim during which Das was allegedly assaulted. After the scuffle, both sides returned to their homes.
Later that night, at around 2 am, Das reportedly fell unconscious. He was first taken to a local hospital and later referred to Santirbazar District Hospital. From there he was shifted to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
Police said Das succumbed to his injuries late on Saturday night while undergoing treatment.
Sen said the accused persons had admitted during questioning that they had beaten Das during the altercation on March 5.
Police said further investigation into the case was underway.
