The Tripura Legislative Assembly is set to elect its Speaker on 18th March, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced today. In addition, seven new bills will be tabled during this year’s budget session.

Speaking after an urgent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) this afternoon, Minister Nath said the Assembly session began with Governor Indrasena Reddy delivering his address. “After the Governor’s speech, the acting Speaker convened a BAC meeting. While the first BAC meeting did not discuss the Speaker’s election, today a proposal regarding it was introduced,” he explained.

He outlined the election procedure: “On 16th March, the Speaker-in-charge will announce the election schedule. Nomination papers can be submitted on 17th March, along with time for scrutiny and withdrawal. If there is only one nomination, the Speaker will be declared elected on 18th March. If multiple nominations are received, a ballot will determine the outcome, which will also be finalized on 17th March.”

Minister Nath also confirmed that the Assembly agenda has expanded. “Initially, three bills were proposed during the first BAC meeting. Now, seven additional bills have been added, including the Tripura Lift and Escalators Bill, Tripura Guaranteed Services to Citizens Bill, Tripura Ease of Doing Business 2026 Bill, MBB University Amendment Bill, Science, Technology and Allied Skill University Bill, Atal Vihar Bajpayee Skill University Bill, and the International University Bill,” he said.

“The Speaker-in-charge called the BAC meeting to adjust the agenda, and with our consent, the additional bills were approved,” Minister Nath added.
