At least seven people, including a woman, were injured in a violent scuffle that broke out late Wednesday night in Hirachara village under Gournagar RD Block of Unakoti district, Tripura, following allegations of dog slaughter and illegal sale.

According to police sources, the clash erupted after tensions simmering for several days reached a boiling point. The injured individuals were admitted to Bhagaban Nagar District Hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.

Local residents said the unrest began after three individuals were accused of slaughtering and selling dogs in the area. One of the accused, identified as Pintu Das, has reportedly been absconding since the allegations came to light.

The situation escalated when relatives of Pintu Das allegedly attacked the house of the complainant, Rajaram Nunia Munda.

“In an attempt to stop the assault, several people, including my wife, were injured,” said Rajaram.

Rajaram has filed a complaint at Irani Police Station, naming Pintu Das in connection with the alleged dog slaughter. He also claimed that his younger brother, Golap Chasha, and one Sultan Ali were seriously injured in the attack and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

In a counter-complaint, relatives of Pintu Das accused Rajaram and his associates of launching an attack on their family and vandalising their property.

Upon receiving information, a large contingent of police from Kailashahar and Irani police stations, led by Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation.

“The situation is now under control. Security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order,” said SDPO Jayanta Karmakar.
