Kashmir Valley witnessed its first snowfall of the season as snow blanketed the higher reaches and rainfall drenched the plains over the past 24 hours, ending a prolonged dry spell that lasted nearly three months.

The change in weather coincided with the onset of Chillai Kalan, the 40-day period known for the harshest winter conditions in the region.

Gulmarg, the renowned ski destination, received around nine inches of fresh snow, transforming the resort into a winter wonderland. The snowfall has lifted spirits among skiers, tourism operators, and visitors eagerly awaiting Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Other popular hill stations, including Sonamarg and Pahalgam, also experienced their first snowfall of the season. Hoteliers, travel agents, and tour operators are optimistic about an influx of tourists in the coming days.

The snowfall has brought much-needed relief to farmers and orchardists, as the extended dry spell had raised concerns over the Rabi crop and the upcoming fruit-growing season. Snow during Chillai Kalan plays a vital role in recharging mountain-based perennial water sources.

These natural reservoirs are crucial for maintaining rivers, streams, lakes, and springs across Jammu and Kashmir during the summer months.

Health experts have also welcomed the precipitation, noting that rain and snow are expected to improve air quality in the Valley, offering relief to people suffering from respiratory and chest-related ailments.

According to officials from the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain or snowfall may continue at isolated locations across the Union Territory over the next 24 hours.

Minimum temperatures recorded included 4°C in Srinagar, minus 2.4°C in Gulmarg, and 2.4°C in Pahalgam. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 10.4°C, while Katra registered similar conditions. Batote recorded 6.5°C, Banihal 2.4°C, Bhaderwah 2.2°C, and other regions experienced sub-seasonal temperatures.

Meanwhile, several key routes have been closed due to snowfall. The Srinagar–Leh highway and Mughal Road remain shut, while traffic has also been suspended on Sinthan Pass, Razdan Pass, and Sadna Top as a precautionary measure.
