Residents of Ward No. 12 under the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat staged a road blockade on Thursday along the Sonamura–Boxanagar Road near the N.C. Singar BSF Camp, demanding an immediate solution to the long-standing problems of deteriorating roads and inadequate drinking water supply. The protest disrupted vehicular movement for some time.
The demonstrators alleged that despite the ward being represented by the Vice Chairman of the Nagar Panchayat, there has been little visible development in the area. They claimed that repeated appeals to the concerned authorities regarding the poor condition of the road and the persistent drinking water crisis had failed to produce any effective action, leaving them with no option but to resort to protest.
Residents further alleged that during the blockade, a few individuals said to be close to the Vice Chairman arrived at the protest site and attempted to intimidate the demonstrators by warning them about the rules governing road blockades. The incident briefly heightened tension in the area.
The protesters demanded the immediate restoration of a regular drinking water supply and urgent repair of the damaged road. They also warned that if their demands are not addressed promptly, they will launch a larger-scale agitation in the coming days.
