President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday paid homage to the Indian Armed Forces on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, stating that the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of India’s soldiers continue to fill the nation with pride and inspire generations.

Observed every year on December 16, Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation.

The day also marks the surrender of nearly 93,000 Pakistani troops to the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka — the largest military surrender since the Second World War. Vijay Diwas stands as a tribute to the bravery and supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought for the nation’s honour and freedom.

In a message shared on X, President Murmu said, “On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I offer my humble respects to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valour and unparalleled devotion to the motherland have always filled the nation with pride. Their heroism and patriotism will continue to inspire the people of the country.”

The President also highlighted the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts toward Atmanirbhar Bharat, guided by the principle of ‘Swadeshikaran (indigenisation) leading to Sashaktikaran (empowerment)’. She noted that the focus on developing indigenous defence equipment and technologies aims to reduce dependence on imports, enhance operational capability, and build a modern, agile, and technologically advanced force.

Referring to Operation Sindoor, President Murmu said the Army’s demonstration of self-reliance and strategic preparedness reflects India’s resolve to meet future security challenges. She praised the effective use of modern warfare techniques and described the operation as a source of inspiration for the nation.

Extending her greetings, the President said, “I convey my best wishes to all soldiers and their families. Jai Hind!”
