In a deeply alarming case of medical negligence, a pregnant woman was administered an expired injection in Agartala, prompting serious concerns about drug safety practices in city pharmacies.
According to reports, Saurabh Deb, a resident of Math Chaomuhani, took his pregnant wife for a consultation with renowned gynecologist Dr. Abhijit Shil. Following the consultation, Dr. Shil prescribed an injection, which Deb procured from Ritwika Medical Hall as directed.
However, shortly after the injection was administered, Deb noticed the drug’s expiry date had already passed.
Disturbed by this revelation, he immediately filed a complaint at the local police station and informed Dr. Shil of the situation.
Speaking to the media, Deb said his wife's condition had slightly worsened since taking the injection. “We are extremely worried. I’ve already filed a police complaint and contacted the doctor,” he said.
When confronted, the owner of Ritwika Medical Hall admitted the lapse and expressed dismay. “We regularly dispose of expired medicines every month. I’m shocked this one was missed. This is highly unusual,” he stated.
The employee responsible for dispensing the medicine also claimed the expired stock is usually removed in time, but could not explain how the expired vial was overlooked.
In a comment that has further fueled public anger, the shop owner said, “Only the doctor and God can now say what will happen to the patient.”
The incident has drawn widespread outrage and reignited debate over the accountability of pharmacists and healthcare providers in such cases. As of now, authorities have not issued a formal statement. However, legal proceedings are underway following the FIR lodged by Deb, and health officials are expected to launch an investigation into the matter.
