In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat in Tripura’s Dhalai district has introduced compostable bags made from PBAT — a biodegradable and chemical-free polymer — as an alternative to single-use plastic.

As per officials this innovative initiative aligns with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and India’s commitment to a circular economy.

“Certified by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) for compostability and biodegradability, these eco-friendly bags decompose within 180 days — a remarkable improvement over traditional plastic bags that linger for centuries. Priced affordably at Rs 145 per kg (wholesale) and Rs 160 per kg (retail), the bags are accessible to both local vendors and consumers” said official.

They said that Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat has not only launched the bags but is also actively engaging with the local community through awareness campaigns and outreach programs.

“The aim is to reduce plastic pollution, promote responsible waste management, and foster sustainable habits at the grassroots level. The initiative is part of a broader national movement under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, which is transforming the challenge of plastic waste into an opportunity for innovation. Urban Local Bodies across India are adopting the RRR model—Recycle, Reuse, and Recovery—to manage waste and drive sustainability. The Mission, guided by the principles of Swabhav, Swachhata, Sanskar, is fueling grassroots action and enabling India to meet its Sustainable Development Goals. India’s approach to plastic waste management is increasingly becoming a multi-stakeholder effort, where cities, states, startups, and citizens collaborate to develop scalable, eco-friendly solutions”, said the official.

Kamalpur’s PBAT bag initiative stands as a model for how local action can contribute to national and global environmental priorities
