A special one-day session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly commenced in Agartala with a focus on reinforcing and safeguarding the constitutional rights of women in India. The session also aims to revive efforts to advance the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, popularly known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which proposes one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
Speaker Rampada Jamatia opened the proceedings by reading out obituaries, including those of former minister Kartik Kanya Debbarma and renowned singer Asha Bhosle.
Subsequently, Government Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy introduced a motion emphasizing the need to protect and strengthen women’s constitutional rights. The motion calls for building consensus among political parties across the country and urges the Central Government to expedite the delimitation process based on the 2011 Census. It also appeals for renewed efforts to pass the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The special session was convened by the Speaker following a petition submitted by 17 members of the Assembly, including Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy.
