In a significant step towards strengthening the healthcare infrastructure of Tripura, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced that the construction of a new building at GB Pant Hospital is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by 2027.
The expansion aims to address space constraints and improve patient care at the state's premier referral hospital.
Speaking at the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Dr. Saha emphasized that despite increasing patient influx, GBP Hospital continues to deliver uninterrupted medical services. He noted that while sub-divisional and district hospitals cater to general healthcare needs, complex medical conditions requiring advanced diagnostic tools and specialized treatments necessitate referrals to GBP Hospital.
Highlighting the commitment of doctors and medical staff, the Chief Minister assured that the hospital is well-equipped to handle critical cases.
"Patients referred from different parts of the state receive high-quality treatment from experienced specialists at GBP Hospital," he said.
Dr. Saha further elaborated on the infrastructural improvements, stating that once the new block is operational, departments facing space shortages will be relocated, ensuring a more efficient medical service delivery system.
The state's flagship medical institution currently offers super specialty services in nine key departments, including Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Nephrology, and Plastic Surgery. Between April 1, 2022, and February 28, 2025, GBP Hospital has successfully conducted two kidney transplants, 60 open-heart surgeries, and 22 Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedures.
At present, the super specialty block has 15 expert doctors, with 11 serving as permanent specialists and four employed on a contractual basis. The government remains committed to further strengthening the hospital’s capabilities, ensuring that no patient is deprived of quality healthcare in Tripura.
