The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in Tuikarma under Tripura’s Khowai district on the night of July 28.
The Commission has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, seeking a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within three days.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the NCW expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating, "The Commission strongly condemns the reported gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in Tripura. Considering the gravity of the matter, Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has taken suo motu cognizance and written to the DGP to ensure a fair, swift, and time-bound investigation."
The Commission has urged that the accused be booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and arrested without delay. It also emphasized the need to provide the survivor with all possible support, including medical care and psychological assistance.
The NCW has directed the Tripura Police to submit a copy of the FIR along with the ATR within three days.
So far, police have arrested one accused, identified as Antar Miah, who is currently in judicial custody.
A manhunt is underway to apprehend another accused, Hiran Miah, who remains absconding.
