The District and Sessions Judge Court of Belonia in the South District on Friday convicted a man and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for allegedly raping minor girl in 2024.
According to a press release from Tripura Police, on 14th September 2024, the accused, Prasenjit Muhuri, allegedly wrongfully restrained a young girl near Kali Bari in Dharmanagar under Belonia Police Station jurisdiction. The victim was returning home from Dharmanagar Senior Basic School when the accused forcibly abducted her by vehicle and took her to a rubber garden where he committed rape. Later that night, Prasenjit Muhuri reportedly dropped the victim near the residence of Gouranga Dutta and fled the scene.
The learned Special Judge of Belonia, South District, convicted 22-year-old Prasenjit Muhuri under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
He was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will serve an additional two months of simple imprisonment.
Additionally, the convict was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 2,000, and a further one month of simple imprisonment in default of fine payment, for another offence.
The case was thoroughly investigated by Women Inspector Swapna Bhowmik of the Belonia Women Police Station, who submitted the charge sheet leading to the conviction.
