The ‘Make in India’ initiative, launched 11 years ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has positioned the country as a global manufacturing powerhouse, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.
Highlighting the programme’s achievements, Goyal said India has seen record foreign direct investment (FDI), major improvements in ease of doing business, and a rise as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. He added that exports and indigenous defence production have also seen significant growth.
The minister credited the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme with attracting large investments and generating employment, while India’s startup ecosystem—driven by youth and women—has made the nation the world’s third-largest hub for innovation.
“This journey has been made possible by the collective effort of industry, MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and every citizen carrying the spirit of Swadeshi,” Goyal noted, adding that the next phase of ‘Make in India’ will script India’s path toward becoming a developed and self-reliant nation.
Marking the anniversary last week, the Commerce Ministry unveiled new measures to strengthen the initiative. These include projects by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to enhance logistics efficiency and competitiveness, as well as the launch of Logistics Data Bank (LDB) 2.0 to support India’s digital and export readiness.
