In a landmark verdict, the Ld. Sessions Judge of Ambassa today convicted 47-year-old Bijoy Debbarma of Khasiapunji for his role in a deadly firing incident at Tankarai TSR Post in Longtharai Valley Sub-Division.

Bijoy Debbarma has been sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In case of default in paying the fine, he will face an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

In addition, the convict received further sentences for other offenses:

  • 10 years imprisonment with a Rs. 5,000 fine under Section 307 IPC (attempt to murder).

  • 7 years imprisonment with a Rs. 5,000 fine under Section 201 IPC (destruction of evidence).

  • 3 years imprisonment with a Rs. 2,000 fine under Section 27(1) of the Arms Act.

All sentences will run concurrently with ST(T-1) 18/2014 and Chawmanu PS Case No. 02/2013.

The case dates back to January 28, 2013, when Bijoy Debbarma allegedly opened indiscriminate fire with his 7.62 mm service SLR at the TSR post, injuring six personnel, two of whom tragically succumbed to their injuries on the spot.

After a thorough investigation, Sub-Inspector Udhyam Debbarma of Chawmanu Police Station submitted the chargesheet on February 10, 2017, leading to the trial that culminated in today’s conviction.

This verdict marks a significant step in delivering justice for the victims and sending a strong message against violent acts within armed forces installations.
