Justice M. Sundar was on Monday sworn in as the 10th Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court at a ceremony held in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office.
The appointment of Justice Sundar, previously serving at the Madras High Court, was approved by President Droupadi Murmu on September 13. He succeeds Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, who retired on September 14.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, MLAs, judges, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, senior civil, police, military and judicial officers, as well as representatives of Bar Associations.
Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice Sundar pursued the five-year integrated law course at Madras Law College and enrolled as an advocate in 1989. He practiced mainly in the Madras High Court, handling a wide range of civil cases, and also served as Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (2003–2006).
Justice Sundar was elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016. On September 11 this year, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his appointment as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
Established in March 2013, the Manipur High Court is among the three full-fledged High Courts set up in the Northeast that year, along with those in Tripura and Meghalaya. Prior to that, all northeastern states except Sikkim came under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court.
