Gaurav Gogoi faced a significant setback in the Jorhat Assembly constituency, where BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami secured a clear and commanding victory.
According to official figures released by the Election Commission of India on Monday, Goswami won by a margin of 23,182 votes. He received a total of 69,439 votes, while Gogoi, representing the Indian National Congress, managed 46,257 votes.
Other candidates trailed far behind. Pranab Priyankush Dutta from the Aam Aadmi Party secured just 701 votes, while Hemanta Kumar Pegu of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) received 581 votes. Meanwhile, 1,319 voters opted for NOTA (None of the Above).
The outcome in Jorhat reflects a broader trend across Assam, where the Bharatiya Janata Party has strengthened its position. Analysts attribute the party’s success to its focus on development initiatives and its well-organised campaign machinery.
Voting for the Assembly elections took place on April 9, recording a high turnout of 85.96 percent among an electorate exceeding 2.5 crore. A total of 722 candidates contested the elections, including 59 women.
